Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.
This is Janice’s story.

Describe why you chose to become a nurse
Being able to help others during a health crisis is deeply satisfying to me – I can’t imagine doing anything else and I’m so grateful for the privilege.
Describe your most rewarding day on the job
Creating a successful plan to solve a problem in our healthcare system – I love problem solving. One of my most rewarding days is when I schedule time to shadow direct care nurses – seeing the care and compassion they bring to work every single day is inspiring. And if I can make their job easier by removing even a small barrier, it’s a red letter day!
Describe your most challenging day on job
Keeping pace with changes in healthcare must always include taking the time to validate issues and problem solve with frontline nurses. Forgetting to do that makes my job more challenging because thinking I know a solution without their input and expertise almost certainly fails.
Do you have any nurse hacks or lessons learned in the field you would like to share with others?
Providing hope is one of the most priceless gifts that nurses can cultivate. It doesn’t mean sympathizing; it’s helping others to find the courage and strength within themselves to move beyond despair.

Janice’s Nomination
Dear Ashley and the ShiftWizard Team,
Thank you sooo much for this opportunity to recognize nurses! You guys are the BEST!!! — Janice spearheaded all sorts of training efforts at our organization during the weeks of the pandemic. She facilitated a group of Clinical Nurse Specialists and Resource Nurses to create and implement 15 evidence-based policies, procedures and algorithms. As a nurse representative on the system-wide Resource Task Force, she garnered supplies, equipment, and PPE to ensure the safety of our staff. As a result of her organized approach, a team was quickly implemented to train over 940 staff on CAPR/PAPR/N95 use such that as Don/Doff Observers they could keep our staff safe. She collaborated with others in the organization to reach out to a local university to create face shields and CAPR lens on their 3D printers so a supply was delivered to the frontlines, daily. Not to mention the countless hours (weekends, night shift, long days) she spent at the hospital rounding on staff to ensure process were working as intended and faithfully replying to the countless emails sent her way. Nursing quality improvement initiatives were created with Janice’s help and leadership. Janice’s position isn’t a ‘frontline’ position however, during this pandemic Janice was on the frontlines fighting for the safety and wellbeing of our staff and patients.
