Nurse Spotlight

Kearney Regional Medical Center

Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.

This is Jeni’s story.

“She has a way of supporting us that makes us know we are trusted and autonomous.”

Describe why you chose to become a nurse

My Aunt is a nurse and my father served as a Navy Corpsman during Vietnam.  I have always admired them and wanted to be just like them.  I knew from a very young age that I was going to be a nurse.

Describe your most rewarding day on the job

Approximately 15 years ago I made a change from working as a nurse on the floor to working as a nurse in Informatics.  It is very rewarding when we get a chance to build something within the EMR that helps improve workflow processes.

Describe your most challenging day on job

Some of the most challenging days on the job happen during updates/patches.  So many times software changes happen with updates that we aren’t aware of and then then trying to figure out how to either adjust to the change or reverse it.

Do you have any nurse hacks or lessons learned in the field you would like to share with others?

In Google Chrome, press ‘S’ while you right click on an image. You’ll be able to see where the photo potentially originated.

What’s a favorite quote of yours?

“Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world.  For, indeed, that’s all who ever have.”  – Margaret Mead

Anything else you’d like to share?

I just recently learned how to quilt.  My favorite part of quilting is picking out the pattern and material.

For those looking for a way to help others, is there a charity you suggest?

St. Jude Children’s hospital treats and defeats childhood cancers as well as other life-threatening diseases.   Patients are not charged for their care.

Thank you for all you do, Jennifer!

Jeni’s Nomination

Jeni is our supervisor in Informatics. She has been a nurse for around 20 years and is an AMAZING boss. 1st: She is a great communicator. Whether through email, txt, phone calls or 1:1 meetings. If she misses your call, she calls you right back. We have clear communication and know what our goals are as a department and individually. 2nd: She has a way of supporting us that makes us know we are trusted and autonomous. We are part of a wonderful team. She works “in the trenches” with us. [She] always has time for a question and helps each one of us to use our unique talents to make us a very strong department. 3rd: She truly cares about our families and our work life balances. She knows us as staff as well as individuals. She knows our strengths and lets us utilize them to contribute to the group and therefore the hospital. 4th: We have fun! WE are able to laugh, joke, and enjoy our co-workers. She has created a group that is more like family!

I am leaving out so many of her great qualities but all of the things listed above help her to have a great staff that is truly putting the patient first! She has been an essential frontline working during COVID, just not the way most people think of health care providers. Quickly changing to the needs of the hospital and clinic which, somedays, has been hourly or more and always with a smile. I am grateful she added me to her staff and tha ti get to work with such a wonderful, care NURSE!
