Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.

This is Karen’s story.

Describe why you chose to become a nurse

Many in my family have been great examples to me over the years. My grandmother took care of her elderly family members, my father was a CRNA and my mother was an RN. I am the oldest of 7 and it was just natural to help my mother. I just enjoy using my God given talents to serve others and nursing just came naturally.

Describe your most rewarding day on the job

Any day I can help lighten my coworkers load or help a patient by encouraging them is a good day for me. I don’t see what I do as anything other than what I’m here to do. I need to be active and I am willing to do what is needed.

Describe your most challenging day on job

The most challenging day for me is currently having to wear masks. It is hard to read people. Stress shows on our faces even though our words may say otherwise.

Do you have any nurse hacks or lessons learned in the field you would like to share with others?

No matter how busy you may be take time to do the little things. Sitting and listening to someone means more than our nursing duties.

What’s a favorite quote of yours?

Philippians 4:8-9 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable— if anything is excellent or praiseworthy— think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me— put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

For those looking for a way to help others, is there a charity you suggest?

Hope E-Free Church. It is a missional Church that reaches out to the low income community in Kearney

Karen does whatever is asked of her, always has a positive attitude, a strong faith, and she inspires others. Karen is organized, helpful and thoughtful. Karen is dependable, compassionate and knowledgeable. Karen is up for the challenge no matter what life or work throws at her and she deserves this honor. Thank you for recognizing her.
