Nurse Spotlight

Swedish Hospital

Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.

This is Katie’s story.

“Suddenly and unexpectedly, the patient took a turn and began to become bradycardic. Katie noticed the cardiac changes and grabbed a phone and ran to the room.”

Describe why you chose to become a nurse

I became a nurse because I find it extremely rewarding to help those who are in need; I love knowing that I can make an impact on someone’s health and quality of life.

Describe your most rewarding day on the job

Every day is rewarding when you are caring for patients. Recently, I was able to care for a patient who was positive for COVID-19. When I was done with my shift, the patient held my hand in tears and continuously thanked me for taking care of them and letting them feel like they were not alone. That touched my heart. I later found out the patient was successfully discharged home to their family.

Describe your most challenging day on job

My most challenging day was seeing a patient pass away in their hospital bed from COVID-19. As I held the patient’s hand and comforted them, I was also able to hold the patient’s phone up so they could say goodbye to their family. It was heart-breaking. I sat there in tears and just kept reminding myself that the patient was not alone and that we were there for them throughout the entire process.

Do you have any nurse hacks or lessons learned in the field you would like to share with others?

Although medical care is most important while patients are here for their health, I also find it just as important to provide patients with some extra TLC and make sure they feel safe, loved, and comfortable!

What’s a favorite quote of yours?

“Imperfections are not inadequacies; they are reminders that we’re all in this together.”- Brene Brown

Anything else you’d like to share?

Swedish Hospital staff rocks! We all work together so well as team! We would not be a team without all divisions of healthcare teams coming together for our patients!!

Katie’s Nomination

Covid-19 has really taken a toll on everyone’s spirit. It becomes even more difficult when end of life decisions are being made and there are visitor restrictions preventing patient’s loved ones being present for their last moments. We had a patient whose family was making the hospice decisions for their loved one. The patient was still alert and talking while waiting for the hospice team to come and evaluate. Suddenly and unexpectedly, the patient took a turn and began to become bradycardic. Katie noticed the cardiac changes and grabbed a phone and ran to the room. She was able to gown up, enter the room and call the patient’s family. They were able to speak with their loved one as the patient was passing. This was truly an act of compassion and dedication at the time of death. After all was said and done, Katie was debriefed and said, “I wish I would have done more.” Katie, being the compassionate and dedicated nurse she is, was able to help a patient pass with the patient’s family present. The patient wasn’t alone. It was truly a gift.
