Nurse Spotlight

Tri-State Hospital

Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.

This is Kerry’s story.

“I love having a supervisor that supports me. I consider her family. I strive to live up to the standards she displays daily.”

Describe why you chose to become a nurse

I chose to become a nurse because I loved the critical thinking involved in managing critically ill patients. I have a thirst for knowledge, and critical care never has a shortage of learning opportunities. As my career has progressed I have moved away from critical care, but the skills I honed in the ICU will be with me forever. That is what I love about nursing so much — so many skills translate from one area to another!

Describe your most rewarding day on the job

One of my most rewarding days on the job was when I worked in the ICU and had a neuro trauma patient. The patient experienced a brain bleed in the middle of my shift, but we were able to act quickly and get them to surgery so that they could make a full recovery.

Describe your most challenging day on job

My most challenging day was when I had the privilege of caring for a patient who was dying of cancer. I was in the room with the patient, surrounded by their family, as the patient took their last breaths. It was simultaneously one of the most rewarding days of my career as well.

Do you have any nurse hacks or lessons learned in the field you would like to share with others?

The biggest tip I can give somebody is to get things done early because you never know what will happen later on. If you want to get out on time or not be stressed when a code rolls through the door, don’t put off your baths and dressing changes!

Get $#!t done!

For those looking for a way to help others, is there a charity you suggest?

The Tri-State Hospital Foundation. The Foundation does a lot of outreach work, funds projects in the hospital, and provides patient assistance. They are a wonderful group of individuals who embody the philosophy of community.

Thank you for all you do, Kerry!

Kerry’s Nomination

Kerry works hard even on her days off to provide support for her team. She gets called in the middle of the night and responds to our cries for help. Kerry loves her staff and supports our needs and helps us with our personal growth. She can fix any problem. She is a fantastic nurse and supervisor. She is an excellent resource for our patients. Kerry has stepped up to the plate during the Covid crisis. She spends a lot of her personal time making our job at Tri-State a little easier. I love having a supervisor that supports me. I consider her family. I strive to live up to the standards she displays daily.
