Nurse Spotlight

Clarinda Regional Health Center

Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.

This is Mandy’s story.

“Allow your patients to have a voice in the care and listen to your gut! ”

Describe why you chose to become a nurse

I chose to become a nurse because I love helping people. When I was younger, I wanted to be a teacher. With nursing you get the best of both worlds helping people learn about healthcare and educating them on disease processes and much more. I have always loved science and the “why” behind why we as healthcare providers do what we do.

Describe your most rewarding day on the job

The most rewarding day on the job for me has probably been when I was caring for a patient that was so extremely anxious for a procedure and I walked them through the process of everything we were doing and you could just see a calm come over the patient. She thanked me continuously for explaining everything. I told her with healthcare people are afraid of the unknown, so it is my job to explain the process, so you understand it to help you through this difficult time.

Describe your most challenging day on job

The most challenging day on the job is when a patient is non-compliant. I believe that most the time when a patient is non-compliant it is because they truly need more education. Working with the patient and becoming a collaborative team, you will hopefully see a different in compliance.

Do you have any nurse hacks or lessons learned in the field you would like to share with others?

Allow your patients to have a voice in the care and listen to your gut!

What’s a favorite quote of yours?

I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.—Albert Einstein

For those looking for a way to help others, is there a charity you suggest?

American Heart Association- The education the promote is phenomenal for patients and that is why we are here, for the patients!

Thank you for all you do, Mandy!

Mandy’s Nomination

Mandy always has a positive attitude and a willingness to step up when needed. COVID-19 change the dynamic in surgery and she was instructed to educate and develop surgery staff to care for ventilator patients. With her doing this, it allowed other departments to continue to care for patients knowing that the surgery team was ready. Mandy is always someone you can go to and always works to better care for our patients
