Nurse Spotlight

Hoboken University Medical Center

Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.

This is Marisa’s story.

“Today… amid so much darkness, we need to see the light of hope and to be men and women who bring hope to others; to look upon them with tenderness and love.”

Describe why you chose to become a nurse

I have known since kindergarten that I wanted to be a nurse. My passion for volunteering started at this young age, and I have grown to realize that this is the best profession I could have chosen to extend a helping hand to anyone, in all walks of life, in any way I can.

Describe your most rewarding day on the job

The most rewarding day on the job is when your patient feels comfortable and calm, smiling and thanking you for your help. And their family acknowledges your dedication towards taking care of their family member.

Describe your most challenging day on job

The most challenging day on the job was taking care of six COVID-19 patients at the same time who are all on ventilators, with 6-8 IV drips, sedated, unable to communicate their needs, trying to fight to stay alive and inability of the family to be with their loved ones at this time.

Do you have any nurse hacks or lessons learned in the field you would like to share with others?

Be strong, compassionate, patient, and humble.

What’s a favorite quote of yours?

Today… amid so much darkness, we need to see the light of hope and to be men and
women who bring hope to others; to look upon them with tenderness and love.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Open your hearts with kindness, faith, and understanding.

For those looking for a way to help others, is there a charity you suggest?

Marisa’s Nomination

I would like to nominate Marisa Mutuc for outstanding work during the Corona Virus Crisis from Hoboken University Medical Center. She worked not only the medical surgical areas but also went to ICU willingly without even thinking about it, she demonstrated true leadership, and she was a team player no matter where she was assigned.
