Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.
This is Nicole’s story.
“What I love about my WakeMed AED family is that we all work together so well to provide the best and efficient care possible. You’re never alone here in the AED.”
Describe why you chose to become a nurse
I wanted to become a nurse after growing up seeing my grandpa in and out of the hospital. I was so interested in his care and what was going on, and found myself eager to know more. Then in high school I got a mentor who happened to be a nurse, learning from her and hearing her nursing stories drove me to want to pursue a nursing career even more.
Describe your most rewarding day on the job
I find that my most rewarding days are those when my team and I flow together so smoothly. Nursing is a team effort and I could not do what I do without the support of my ED family.
As an ER nurse, “thank you’s” just don’t come as often as you’d think. After a hard day, a simple thank you from a patient can completely make my day and give me the push I need to be even better.
Describe your most challenging day on job
My most challenging day on the job are those days where it seems the ED cannot keep up. Patients flowing in, with nowhere to put them, just waiting waiting waiting for rooms, and trying to keep my patients calm in the meantime. These days can easily become overwhelming, and make you feel like you’re drowning. But what I love about my WakeMed AED family is that we all work together so well to provide the best and efficient care possible. You’re never alone here in the AED.
Do you have any nurse hacks or lessons learned in the field you would like to share with others?
The biggest thing I’ve learned in the short time I’ve been a nurse is to soak in all of the advice other nurses, doctors, etc. can give you. You can never receive TOO much advice, even if you’ve heard it from others before. Everyone has their own way of doing things; no one person’s way is right. When you keep an open mind, you can learn so many new techniques in adapting and enhancing your nursing skills and care for the betterment of your patients.
What’s a favorite quote of yours?
Not so much a quote but a Bible verse I try to live by. Matthew 5:16 – “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Anything else you’d like to share?
I am just so honored to hold the title “RN.” It is something I worked so hard for and I overcame many obstacles to obtain. I’m so grateful that you guys are giving the opportunity recognize the many amazing nurses that WakeMed has!
For those looking for a way to help others, is there a charity you suggest?
Helping Hand Mission in Raleigh. They help provide families in need with food, medications, housing, clothes, etc. Working as an ED nurse, I see so many patients who are homeless and could benefit from organizations like this.
Thank you for all you do, Nicole!
Thank you for helping us honor Nicole and the profession of nursing, Melissa. We salute you!
