Nurse Spotlight

Cedars Sinai Medical Center

Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.

This is Richard’s story.

Nurse Spotlight

Nurse Mask

“I would choose Richard to take care of me and my loved ones if I ever get sick.”

Describe why you chose to become a nurse

When I was in high school and I wanted to go to college to study Education, and my father suggested Nursing. He passed away before my high school graduation. My brother at one point gave me the idea that if I became a nurse, I could choose to either work as a nurse in an academic setting or in the hospital, so that also influenced my decision to go nursing school.

Describe your most rewarding day on the job

A most rewarding day on the job is when patient and family members give me their gratitude for taking care of their loved one no matter what the outcome was, or a patient writes a poem for me for taking care of her and saying “I can not give you a gift, but I can write you a poem.”

Describe your most challenging day on job

A most challenging day would be when taking care of patient and then “the unexpected situation” arises.

Do you have any nurse hacks or lessons learned in the field you would like to share with others?

I learn whatever I can while at work: from the situation, the people I care for and the people I work with and I apply it to every situation possible.

What’s a favorite quote of yours?

A favorite saying is “Expect the unexpected.“ I always keep it in mind most of the time whether at work, home, or travel, which I believe is relatable in my line of work.

Anything else you’d like to share?

As nurses, we not only have to care for others; we also have to take care of ourselves in whatever way we can.

Thank you for all you do, Richard!

Richard’s Nomination

ICU is extremely lucky to have a nurse like Richard. He is truly an asset to this hospital. He goes above and beyond his calling to make sure his patients are well cared for. I would choose him to take care of me and my loved ones if I ever get sick. He communicates well with patients’ families, updating them of what’s going on with their loved ones, and discussing the plan of care. He makes sure that all their questions and concerns are answered. He recently took an extra shift to help care for a very sick patient. He talks to his patients as if they can answer back. Although he is busy with his own patients in ICU, he still has the energy to help other nurses without hesitation. He always helps if somebody asks him for help. The floor nurses personally ask him to start an IV or help them with other patient related stuff. He never complains. I always feel safe and confident that patients will have excellent care with Richard. He is the type of person who never gets tired of taking care of sick people. He is compassionate and, in every sense of the word, a “true” nurse. I always look forward to working with him. And I’m proud to be one of his friends.

I would like to submit Richard Respicio, RN. He is always available, never loses his patience, and is constantly teaching me how to be a better nurse. I know I speak for others as well when I say I am so grateful for all of his help and his generous wealth of knowledge. He is one of my mentors, and I believe he deserves to be recognized.
