Nurse Spotlight

Monongahela Valley Hospital

Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.

This is Becky’s story.

“Don’t give up, don’t ever give up!”

Describe why you chose to become a nurse

I have always been a caring and compassionate person when it came to my family, so I decided, why not do that for other families as well.

Describe your most rewarding day on the job

I work on an orthopedic floor and see many elderly that are admitted with broken bones.  Being able to see them progress and go home is always rewarding.

Describe your most challenging day on job

While I work on a medical-surgical floor, patients conditions can change very quickly, so everyday can be challenging.

What’s a favorite quote of yours?

“Don’t give up, don’t ever give up!” – Jimmy V

Anything else you’d like to share?

I decided to go back to nursing school after raising 3 children and being a stay at home mom.

For those looking for a way to help others, is there a charity you suggest?

American Cancer Society.  My father passed away in 2017 from prostate cancer

Thank you for all you do, Becky!

Becky’s Nomination

A patient’s daughter called yesterday afternoon after her mother had passed to express the following information to me about the compassion that a nurse had done for her. She was unable to come up from out of state due to the current status with the COVID-19 pandemic. She had heard that her mother had fallen and had surgery. She called in to speak to the nurse and the nurse went in with her mother to transfer the call and made sure that the patient spoke to her. Through her tears, she went on to state how much she appreciated being able to speak to her mother the night before. Now that her mother had passed, the daughter felt she had closure and was able to state that she loved her and her mom was able to state it back. Had Becky not made the arrangements to put them on the phone together, since the patient had dementia, the patient’s daughter would have not had peace with her death.
