Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.

This is Darcy’s story.

Describe why you chose to become a nurse

I have always had a great passion for helping people but I didn’t become a nurse until later in my life. After caring for a family member during an illness, I realized that that passion could become a career and that I could be there for others the way the nurses were there for both my family member and myself during some hard times.

Describe your most rewarding day on the job

For me, every day has a rewarding moment, even if its just getting a patient to laugh and forget about what is going on for a little while.

Describe your most challenging day on job

The most challenging day on the job for me was a recent one, I was charge nurse and we had several patients that were very sick and I was trying to help the nurses, as well as see to my own patients and I didn’t feel like I was able to give everyone the care I would have liked to have. I have been in codes where patients didn’t make it and it was hard but I was able to know that we did everything that we could. I had to step back and look at that day the same, everyone did our best. While I didn’t feel like I was able to do as much as I would liked to have, thanks to the amazing people I work with, all the patients were safe and stable at the end of our shift.

Do you have any nurse hacks or lessons learned in the field you would like to share with others?

The biggest thing that I have learned is to enjoy the little moments that come along and try to bring some love and laughter to your patients. Sometimes even the grumpiest patients are truly just scared and could use some laughter.

What’s a favorite quote of yours?

Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength.

Anything else you’d like to share?

​I just want to thank you for doing this and taking the time to spotlight nurses. I don’t think anything I do is above and beyond that of any other nurse, but it means a lot to me that someone I work with thinks I deserve recognition.

For those looking for a way to help others, is there a charity you suggest?

I would like to donate the money to the Gary Sinise Foundation. I used to work with injured veterans and have family that are first responders and I am very proud of the support and work that organization does for those groups.
