Nurse Spotlight

WakeMed

Stories of Florence Nightingale’s compassion, bravery, and leadership have shaped modern nursing and influenced and inspired millions. As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth, we are honored to shine a light on today’s #NurseHeroes on the front lines by sharing some of their stories.

This is Michelles’s story.

“None of us can do what we do without the other pieces of our team and together we are amazing.”

Describe your most rewarding day on the job

When a mother is experiencing an obstetrical emergency and the entire team pulls together (nurses, doctors, anesthesia, surgical techs) to get her through it. None of us can do what we do without the other pieces of our team and together we are amazing.

Describe your most challenging day on job

Caring for a family experiencing a fetal loss is one of the most challenging things we face as Labor & Delivery Nurses. It is often unexpected, and not only are we providing labor support we are caring for the whole family as they navigate this period of grief.

What’s a favorite quote of yours?

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything; but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” – Edward Everett Hale

For those looking for a way to help others, is there a charity you suggest?

Maddie’s Footprints is an organization that provides support to families experiencing fetal or infant loss ranging from assistance with funeral/medical expenses to a community that quickly becomes like family to help grieving families heal and get through one of the darkest/hardest periods of their lives.

Thank you for all you do, Michelle!

Michelle’s Nomination

Michelle has been an intricate part of our leadership team. She has gone above and beyond to make sure that the Labor and Delivery staff had the opportunity to experience a “walk-thru” simulation of what a C-section would look like for a  Covid-19 + patient or PUI. Michelle modified her schedule to make sure that members of the day and night shift were able to attend one of several “walk thru” simulations.  This might not seem like a big deal, but it took a lot of education and coordination with the Main OR and it showed true dedication to the safety and well-being of the staff. We are so lucky to have Michelle on our team.
